Film will pay tribute to island’s individuality

April 8, 2015

A short film on Captiva will premiere April 13. The five-minute video shown at the South Seas Island Resort details the island's physical beauty, a handful of its residents, its history.

The creator of "Discover Captiva Island" said it will emphasize the uniqueness of Captiva, which can get overlooked by its much larger neighbor to the east.

"It's always Sanibel and Captiva, Sanibel and Captiva," Joe Mondelli said. "And I get that that. 'Discover Captiva Island' will tell the story of the other gem that we have here."

Mondelli, owner of the John R. Wood Properties, Island Real Estate firm in Sanibel, funded a film on Sanibel in 2014. "Explore Sanibel Island" premiered at the BIG ARTS complex. Among others, it featured island carving legend Jim Sprankle and Sanibel Sea School founder "Doc" Bruce Neill. The eight-minute film has since gained in notoriety on social media, and is played at the chamber of commerce visitor center.

"Discover Captiva Island" will be a couple of minutes shorter than the Sanibel film, feature four locals of note: Marina owner Dave Jensen, entrepreneur Rene Miville, writer Randy Wayne White, and Rachele Noce with the South Seas Island Resort. The film was shot by Fort Myers videographer Dave Stinzi.

The film will be hosted by Doc Ford's Rum Bar & Grille and South Seas Resort. It will show on a large screen at the Chadwicks Square located in front of Doc Ford's. All are welcome. Doc Ford's will provide complimentary refreshments at 8 p.m., with the film starting at dark under the stars.

Mondelli's team worked on the film for over a year.

"When we started with the project we wanted to show the natural beauty of Captiva and ended with not only the beauty, but the rich community life that Captiva residents enjoy," he said.

A trailer of "Discover Captiva Island" is at discovercaptivaisland.com.
