William Francis Olinger, Esq., 76, of Sanibel, FL died Feb. 25, 2015 at Health Park Memorial Center, Fort Myers, FL after a short battle with lung cancer. A Celebration of Life was held March 8th on Sanibel and a Memorial Service will be held in Cedar Rapids at All Saints Catholic Church in June. He was born on Sept. 16, 1938 in Waterloo, IA, a son of Ermin and Augusta (Schares) Olinger. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, University of Iowa, class of 1960, University of Iowa School of Law, class of 1964 with a Juris Doctorate. He served in the Marines Corps. He was a founding partner of Olinger, Sosalla & McManus and later his own firm William F. Olinger P.C. He was inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocacy. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club, Mu Deuteron chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, the McGregor Upper Mississippi Yacht and Boat Club, where he served as Commodore, past board member of the Linn County Historical Society and Tanager Place. He was a prominent historic preservationist having preserved and restored 4 historic houses and two historic churches in Cedar Rapids. He was a trustee of Sny McGill University of So. McGregor, IA, an honorary member of the Corvair Biking Society and a member of the Beachview Tennis team on Sanibel. He loved to play tennis, golf, ski, read and boat on the Mississippi. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jeannie: two sons, Bill of Sanibel, FL and John of Portsmouth, RI, two grandchildren, Grayson and Maryn, a sister, Betty Winder (John) and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Olinger of Cedar Rapids, a niece, Lisa Olinger and great nephew, Jack Dickens of Iowa City and his dog, McGregor. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry Olinger. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to The American Cancer Society, the Juvenile Diabetes Association, St. Marys Catholic Church, McGregor, IA or the Linn County Historical Society.
