Benno Benninga

Benno Benninga died peacefully after a short illness at the Shell Point Retirement Community in Ft. Myers, FL on December 11th at the age of 90. Benno is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carla, son Ron and daughter in law Gigi; and sister Mia. He is preceded in death by his daughter Irene in 1972.

Benno was born on June 27, 1925 in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands to Jacques and Reina Benninga. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1951 with a degree in economics and a MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH in 1956. He married Carla Meijer in 1950. After moving to Cincinnati, OH, Benno worked for Kahn's Meat Packing Company (later a division of Sarah Lee Corp.) as Director of Purchasing for over 30 Years.

Benno was a generous and charming individual with a great sense of humor who loved his family and friends. Along with Carla, he loved living on Sanibel Island for 20 years and they became an integral part of that community. His many friends cherished him and in turn enriched each other's lives.

Benno was passionate about educating the younger generation about the dangers of the Holocaust which he experienced growing up in Holland during World War II. He had a book published based on his father's diary kept during this time called In Hiding and gave talks to groups of students as well as adults on this topic.

A memorial service was held on Thursday December 17th at The Grand Cypress Room/Woodlands at Shell Point Retirement Community where those attended celebrated Benno's life.
