Island Seniors visited St Petersburg May 3 for a whole day of arts.

After a comfortable chartered bus drive, they went on a guided tour of the Chihuly Collection and its extensive collection. This presentation was unique as Chihuly thoughtfully designed the art and architecture to work together and create a visitor experience unlike any other exhibition of his art.

Island Seniors were wowed by Chihuly's spectacular large-scale Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier created specifically for the collection along with room after room filled with works including Mille Fiori, Ikebana, Floats, Persian Sunset and Tumbleweeds to name a few.

The afternoon took them to the Morean Arts Center and Hot Shop, which is a community-based visual arts organization and part of the St. Petersburg cultural landscape since 1917. The center has been a leader in the revitalization of the downtown area, anchoring a thriving arts district composed of galleries, museums and businesses catering to artists.

Then it was off to a glass-blowing demonstration by local artists and to see just how much time, patience and creative thinking goes into all that gorgeous glass.
