Billy Kirkland, owner of Billy's Bike Rentals and Segway of Sanibel, moved to Sanibel in 1985 and has never left. Originally, Kirkland had plans of owning a beach chair rental company on the island in 1977 but plans fell through. He started up his business on Ft. Myers Beach instead. A few years later, he began renting concessions for bike rentals at resorts on the island.

In August of 1999, Kirkland bought what is now Billy's Bike Rentals on Periwinkle Way.

"We've been very lucky and very fortunate that this island has been good to us and that's why we give so much back," Kirkland said. "It's a family run business."

Recently, Kirkland caught the eye of TripAdvisor where he won a certificate of excellence for his attention to customer service.

"It always feels good that someone is recognizing you for what you've done," Kirland said.

This is his third consecutive year receiving an award from TripAdvsior, where he has over 390 reviews. Kirkland said its his service that sets him apart from the rest on the island.

"Our customers tells us, it's not the price, it's the service. They know that the service is consistently always the same. The come back year after year. We're always there to help them if they have a problem," Kirkland said. "I find that they love seeing us every year. Their kids are grown up. Now we've got family that came here as kids and now they're coming here with their kids."

Three years ago, Kirkland opened up his second location in the shopping center where Bailey's General Store is located.

"The new location has done very well for us. It has given customers a different venue and it's closer to this side of the island," he said.

Right now, Kirkland is looking to expand it to include handicap scooters. They also just received a permit from the city to do stand-up paddle boards.

Ryan Markowsky, general manager of the location in the Bailey's General Store shopping plaza has been working with Kirkland for two years. One of his favorite things about the business is that it's run by family.

"I love helping people and I love meeting people from around the world. I was ecstatic when I found out we won the award from TripAdvisor. I'm not saying we deserve it but we strive for that. We push customer service and I was very proud to find that we have received it," Markowsky said.

During the segway tours, which has earned Kirkland acclaim, customers are guided on a 90-minute tour of the island, Kirkland is able to take 10 people at a time. He tries to make the experience as educational as possible.

"We try to educate people as to why Sanibel is Sanibel. We get a lot of reports that come back on the reviews that they're found things about Sanibel they had no idea about," Kirkland said.

In addition to segways, scooters, bikes, beach wheelchairs, boogie boards, beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent.
