Sanibel Captiva Art League paint outs begin new season Oct. 13

October 12, 2016
By ASHLEY GOODMAN (agoodman@breezenewspapers.com) , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Sanibel and Captiva are truly a plein air artist's paradise. Every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon beginning Oct. 13, the Sanibel Captiva Art League invites the public to participate in their weekly paint out sessions.

Each week, the Sanibel Captiva Art League paints different scenes around the islands which can include anything from member's backyards, beaches and some of the resorts. They welcome all skill levels and even those who have never painted outdoors before. At the end of the session, there is a friendly critique.

To Carolyn Johns, chairman of the plein air group, it is all about capturing the moment.

"Some artists even stay in the afternoon to finish it up," Johns said.

She has been actively involved with the Sanibel Captiva Art League since the 90s. She said many of the members have been there for over 25 years.

Johns says the paint out sessions are a good excuse to go out, explore and get familiar with your surroundings.

"It gets you moving on Thursdays to get out, she said. We've seen an influx of new people, and that's a good thing."

This Thursday's paint out will take place between Andy Rosse Lane and Captiva Road. Parking is available at the Bubble Room. Johns recommends bringing your own water, lunch and a seat.

The second paint out on Oct. 20 will take place at the Chapel by the Sea on Chapin Lane and the last paint out of the month which is Oct. 27 takes place at Jensen's Marina.

Anita Force Marshall, co-chair of the plein air group encourages those who have ever been curious, to try it.

"We are all individual artists with different styles, mediums and expertise. Our commonality is a passion for painting outdoors all around our beautiful islands and a camaraderie with fellow artists. If you have ever thought about trying plein air painting check us out, we are a fun group," Force Marshall said.

The first monthly Sanibel Captiva Art League will be held Oct. 20 at the Sanibel Public Library from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Typically, the meetings start in early November.

"It's an earlier meeting than usual. It's a social meeting to say hi to everyone who's back and to let people know about the upcoming programs," Johns said.
