The Writer's Read at BIG ARTS Phillips Gallery is an long-standing island tradition. Since 1987, local writers have been coming together to share their work with the audience and compete against each other. On Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m., local writers like Joe Pacheco, Robert Hilliard, Mary LaVelle, Chris Goodwin and Richard Fox will present some of their stories, memoirs, poetry and pose. A total of 18 readers will be present.

"The pieces are selected by a committee and there are five island groups but they're going to be going down to four now. Members from each group select the best pieces for the program. The winners are announced tow to three weeks before the read," said Joe Pacheco, coordinator of the Writer's Read.

The Writer's Read came to fruition in 1984 after a group of writers on the island got together and began critiquing each other's work. In 1987, the group decided to make it into what it is today.

For someone who has never attended the Writer's Read, Pacheco describes it as very engaging.

"It's a very entertaining evening. Island writers read their works whether it's poetry, a memoir, an essay, poetry or prose. At the read, the selections are usually entertaining or of high interest. We try to select pieces that will entertain and also educate," he said.

Pacheco says that his favorite aspect about the Writer's Read is that the writers have the opportunity to read to their fellow neighbors and share their work to a broad audience.

"You can't go wrong with listening to your neighbors and friends read their work," Pacheco said.

The reception before the event begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $5 at Marks Box Office or by calling (239) 395-0900. For more information about the writer's group contact Joe Pacheco at
