Enough is enough

January 11, 2017
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the editor:

The City Council of Sanibel, the sanctuary island, proposes to sacrifice a large parcel of environmentally sensitive land to build an amusement park for the entertainment of tourists and other transient visitors. A somewhat similar project was roundly defeated a number of years ago, but council has continued to flush money away pursing the concept. The need of a new Senior Center is no excuse for such a mammoth undertaking.

Most of the intended targets for this largesse do not vote here, or pay taxes, but do utilize all our services. The residents of Sanibel are to be burdened with more debt, final costs always exceed estimates, more traffic and congestion, and worst of all, suffer the continued senseless "Naples-ization" of our unique island.

The City Council owes its loyalty to the citizens of Sanibel and the Sanibel Plan, not the Chamber of Commerce, LCVB, or Trip Advisor. Sanibel is our home, not a theme park. Enough is enough.
