Water quality should be No. 1

February 13, 2017
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the editor:

I read with interest our Congressman Francis Rooney's guest commentary that "Repeal and replacement of Obamacare a top priority." While many of us on Sanibel and Captiva believe Obamacare should be replaced, few of us are affected by Obamacare. Congressman Rooney's top priority should be what we are all affected by, the nasty water releases coming down the river. While Rooney's Naples may have crystal blue water, the water here is ruining tourism, fishing, beaches and ultimately our real estate values. It's time to have the politicians, including the Governor, return all the Big Sugar campaign funds and do the right thing, totally buy out Big Sugar. Big Sugar has been buying them out for years, time to turn the table.

By the way, if the good congressman is looking for a replacement for Obamacare how about offering everyone the healthcare coverage you receive as a congressman, and we probably wouldn't object to getting your congressional retirement benefits instead of Social Security.
