Taxpayers ill-served by those who would overturn ACA

February 13, 2017

To the editor:

We, in Southwest Florida are ill served by the likes of Francis Rooney and the Republicans in general. The ACA was passed by Congress despite the opposition of the congressional Republicans. Once passed they never tried to improve the act, remedy any deficiencies, or ever come up with a health insurance plan of their own.

The ACA greatly resembled the insurance plan enacted under Mitt Romney when he was governor of Massachusetts. And why any representative or senator would want to deprive anyone health care is a paradox of the first order. Of all the industrialized nations we were the only one that did not provide subsidized health care for all our citizens.

Under this new administration a top priority is to dismantle the current plan without a viable alternative leaving millions of American citizens uninsured. A viable alternative takes great preparation, hearings, joint committees and dedication. A vote to repeal and a stated resolution to block any action of a President Obama was not public policy.

I believe the current president is entitled to choose whomever for his cabinet and with the absence of any unseemly behavior, criminal or otherwise unearthed by the congressional committees, the designees should be confirmed. But I do not have high hopes that the designated secretary of Health and Human Services and this administration has a clue as to a viable health insurance plan that will meet the needs of uninsured Americans.
