To the editor:
Over the past few years we have increasingly seen the impact that water quality issues have had on our quality of life and our economic well-being. Two incumbent City Council members, Mick Denham and Kevin Ruane, have led a tireless fight to not only represent our local best interest, but also to marshall support from other communities throughout Southwest Florida and the state to be more effective in finding solutions.
Through their efforts and contacts they have brought many other communities on board and have gotten significant attention to the issues from state government. In order to succeed in these efforts it takes time to foster the necessary relationships and drive the message home. In my view we cannot afford to waste the progress that they have made. Good government requires not only smart thinking and perseverance, but also experience to understand how to get things done. They have shown they have all three.
They have been a driving force to bring a better sense of fiscal responsibility to our city government. Where else do you see elected officials find a way to hold, or, reduce taxes without harming the services that we need?
Both Mick and Kevin have been stalwart supporters of the basic concepts and implementation of the Sanibel Plan. While one may quibble with a few of their individual decisions, they have been dedicated to keeping Sanibel our sanctuary island, so different from so much of the rest of Florida.
The last point I want to make is attendance at meetings. You can count on one hand the City Council meetings that other than for family issues, or being out of the country, that either Mick or Kevin have missed. They have been dedicated council members. In my view it is extremely important to have our representatives at all meeting where critical issues are discussed.
The citizens of Sanibel have been well served over the years by these two dedicated public servants. Let's not waste their efforts and accomplishments. Please vote to retain Mick Denham and Kevin Ruane in office.
