Learn about kitchen fundamentals with class

Spend a few hours with Community House Resident Chef Jarred Harris and become more comfortable in your own kitchen while learning how to think like a chef next weekend.

"Cooking should be simple. It's not a chore. Learn how to cook and learn basic kitchen fundamentals," Harris said at the Saturday, Sept. 16 class, which will begin at 10 a.m. "I will teach you how to think and slow down."

"Methodology of a Chef" will go over some "common sense" practices one should utilize while in the kitchen, such as never using glass cups. He said if a glass cup breaks, all the food that is being prepared has to be thrown out to ensure a little piece of glass did not fall into the preparation.

"I will break it down to where it makes sense," Harris said, adding that he will help change the way one thinks when in the kitchen.

A great kitchen, Harris said can be as simple as having such equipment as a good iron skillet and a crockpot.

"It holds heat and makes food taste better because they slow you down," Harris said about purchasing heavier pans. "It maintains heat and you slow down and cook properly."

A crockpot can bring simplicity to one's life due to it giving one with the ability to throw ingredients in a pot and forgetting about it for hours.

He said he understands everyone lives a busy lifestyle, so he will showcase some recipes that will only take about 15 to 30 minutes to cook. Harris said he likes using simple, healthy recipes, so they are not intimidating while preparing.

"It's important to start with good ingredients," he said, adding that it's also important to have preparation before cooking lining up all the ingredients that the recipe calls for.

The class will show such techniques as to how to properly sharpen knives, how to make a good gravy and create sauces out of wine.

In addition to providing a wealth of knowledge, the class will also include some hands-on cooking, while learning how to operate every piece of equipment in the Community House's state-of-the-art kitchen.

The class is $20 and has limited participation.
