Island Seniors, Inc. is hosting its annual event this Saturday, complete with a plethora of gently used items for sale.

More than 20 years ago a sale began to benefit the Island Seniors. Initially the Trash & Treasure Sale kicked off as a way to sell books and arts and crafts before growing into the anticipated event it has become today.

Trash & Treasures slowly went from an event raising hundreds, to $13,000 last year. All of the proceeds raised go directly towards Island Seniors, Inc. to help pay for such areas as programs.

This year the annual sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Center 4 Life building, located at Palm Ridge Road and Library Way. The event is typically held on the second Saturday of November, but was scheduled a week sooner due to Veteran's Day.

"Things you never realized you wanted, or needed are here," Co-Chair Carole Fallon said. "We are constantly recycling each other's treasures."

Throughout the year, island people donate their goods, as a dedicated pool of volunteers sort through the items and price them from 50 cents to more than $100, for the community to purchase.

"There is even better things this year," Anita Force Marshall said.

Individuals start lining up at 8 a.m. awaiting for the doors to open to find such treasures as household items, furniture, toys, hardware, linens, books, sporting goods, glassware, jewelry, kitchen gadgets and collectibles.

Bea Pappas said she has a great deal of sterling, designer pieces of jewelry, costume jewelry and plenty of earrings, bracelets, necklaces and handbags.

Tommy Williams will hold surprise mini auctions during the event. Extra bargains will also be incorporated throughout the sale.

Shoppers also have the opportunity to purchase lunch - hot dogs, chips and soda.

The Trash & Treasures crew would like to thank everyone who has donated items for the sale. Force Marshall encourages those who still have items to drop off, to do so by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1. All gently used items except clothing, shoes, TVs, computers and printers will be greatly accepted. All donations are tax deductible.
