A motorcycle accident Monday along the Midpoint Memorial Bridge left one person dead.

The Fort Myers Police Department reported that Thomas Jacob Hoeft, 23, of Fort Myers, was headed east on the bridge at about noon when he lost control of his 2014 Kawasaki motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the concrete barrier and Hoeft sustained life threatening injuries, dying at the scene.

"Excessive speed has been ruled a contributing factor with the crash," Capt. Jay Rodriguez, with the FMPD's Operations and Investigations Bureau, said today in a prepared statement.

Both of the eastbound lanes were closed as police and emergency crews cleared the roadway and conducted the investigation. Cape Coral police assisted by diverting traffic at Del Prado Boulevard.

The eastbound lanes were later reopened.

"Additional details will be released as they are determined by the Fort Myers Police Department and assisting agencies," J. Mitchell Haley, a spokesman for the FMPD, said in a previous statement.
