People who have been waiting for the new Fresh Market to come to Cape Coral may have to wait a little while longer.

The store has decided to slow up the opening of its new location. The developers at Coralwood Center confirmed to the city that Fresh Market's corporate office decided to go with a new design concept and has halted construction to allow them to resubmit their plans to allow the North Carolina based specialty grocery chain to grow at a more sustained rate.

Connie Barron, city spokesperson, said no other information was forthcoming and the city should know more by the end of the month.

Fresh Market, which was founded in 1982 and now has 170 locations spread throughout the Eastern United States, said in an e-mail it was more a timing issue than a design one.

"In order to provide more flexibility in developing the company's long-term growth strategy, The Fresh Market has re-evaluated the timing of its new store opening announcements. The Fresh Market is continuously reviewing its investment priorities, which often results in shifting opening dates. As such, the company does not plan on projecting or speculating on specific store opening timing prior to construction start," Fresh Market said in a statement.

Fresh Market, a supermarket chain that is known as being more upscale, featuring fresh foods from local growers, has locations in Fort Myers and Naples.

The chain announced in May plans to build a store in Cape Coral at the Coralwood Center on Del Prado, just off Veterans Parkway, in a location being renovated next to Ulta.
