Cape Coral Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run crash that sent an 8-year-old boy to the hospital Monday.

Laura A. Wood, 30, was charged with hit and run causing serious bodily injury, two counts of hit and run with property damage, driving while license suspended with knowledge, and reckless driving after police say she struck a child riding a scooter, stopped and got out of the vehicle she was driving, and then fled with witnesses in pursuit.

The incident happened Monday afternoon in the 1100 block Northeast 9th Street as the boy and his 9-year-old sister were riding scooters back and forth across the street between two driveways, police said.

"The sister made it across when the victim rode directly into the front of the Kia SUV," police said in a release issued Tuesday morning.

"The 8-year-old victim suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was trauma-alerted (as a precaution) to a local hospital. The boy suffered multiple injuries."

Witnesses chased the fleeing Kia but lost sight of it about five minutes into the pursuit.

Meanwhile, investigators were able to get several interviews and collect physical evidence at the scene, including civilian dash-camera footage that captured the car fleeing the scene and driving recklessly, police said.

Officers found the vehicle believed to have been involved in the crash dumped behind a nearby business. It was seized and processed for evidence.

"The investigator was able to direct patrol and traffic officers toward a home address and found the suspect, identified as Laura Wood, 30, of Cape Coral, making it back to her home," the release states.

Wood was arrested late Monday and transported to Lee County Jail where she remained in custody Tuesday morning. Bond for the charges had not yet been set.
