Monthly Boat Talk meetings wrap up until the fall

June 20, 2018
By JOANNE HEROY-GILLER , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

All Salts with America's Boating Club of Sanibel-Captiva met off-island this past week, peppering each other some edgy sea stories and fond remembrances of their times on the water.

With a half a millennium of boating experience between those in attendance, the air was filled with hard-to-believe tales. Some included being stuck in a lock on the Kissimmee River for four hours in the summer heat, being on the Michigan River and getting a prop entangled in suffocating fish net, and being fogged in and trying to reach your port with no compass and GPSs not publicly available.

After sharing their tales of survival, the group moved onto their reasons for their love of boating. The cited: adventure, as evidenced by their sea stories; freedom to explore the liquid half of their world; and the omnipresent camaraderie of the other mariners met in all ports.

The monthly Boat Talk gatherings will resume on Oct. 3 to be held on the first Wednesday of each month at Sanibel Fresh.

The boating club also has a new website at sancapboating.club. The site has information for prospective members and outlines the learning courses and activities available.
