Annual Bag Day coming up at Noah's Ark

August 8, 2018
By TIFFANY REPECKI (trepecki@breezenewspapers.com) , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Shoppers searching for a great deal or many will find one this week at an island thrift store.

Noah's Ark, located at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Sanibel, will host its annual Bag Day event on Aug. 10 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Customers purchase marked bags in the parking lot for $4 each, fill the bags with as many items as the bags can carry, then walk out the door with it all.

Items that do not fit in a bag are 80 percent off of the regular price.

Shoppers purchase bags for $4 before entering Noah’s Ark at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church for Bag Day shopping.

"We close for restocking and painting and cleaning for about six weeks," Susie Scutakes, with Noah's Ark, said of the thrift store. "We have the bag sale to get rid of every item that we have in here."

"We start all over again with all new merchandise in October," she added.

Shoppers can buy as many of the $4 bags as they want.

"They load them up with anything they can fit in there," Scutakes said.

The bags are available for sale starting at 9 a.m., but a line starts forming as early as 8 a.m.

"There's probably close to 100 people lined up in the parking lot," she said. "I would say come early. The ones that want the best deals are there bright and early in the morning."

Noah's Art carries something for everyone.

"We have clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry," Scutakes said. "All kinds of housewares, pots and pans, dishes and glasses lots of knickknacks. We have bedding and table linens lamps."

"We have furniture and small appliances and books," she added.

As of last week, there were a couple couches and a matching dining room set with eight chairs.

"You can get a great couch for $20," Scutakes said. "You could outfit a condo with what we have."

Anything remaining after Bag Day is donated to the veterans association.

"We do have things left over," she said. "They take whatever we haven't sold."

Proceeds from the store help to support either an on-island organization, such as F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva and Community Housing & Resources, or an off-island entity like the Salvation Army.

"Every cent goes to charity," Scutakes said.

Only cash and checks will be accepted.

"That's all the time," she noted.

Those who purchase large items much have them picked up day of or over the weekend.

Noah's Ark will reopen on Oct. 2 on Tuesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In November, it resumes winter hours weekdays and first Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"We will not be accepting any donations until September," Scutakes said.

She encouraged the public to stop by.

"It's a really fun day, it's mayhem," Scutakes said. "It's amazing how the shelves and racks clear."
