Richard (Dick) H Hulit

Fort Myers, FL - Richard (Dick) H. Hulit, 87, died Sunday, April 7th at his home in Shell Point Fort Myers FL. He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, Peg; his son, Richard and his wife Siobhan, his daughter, Betsy Delfosse and her husband Duane; his son Douglas; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and many other close family and friends.

Born and raised in East Orange, NJ, he was the son of Mabel and Edward Hulit. As a young man, Dick was an avid baseball player and was signed by Bill Dickey of the New Yok Yankees. His love of the Yankees and all things baseball continued throughout his life.

Dick met his wife, Peg, at Rutgers University and they became united from that moment on and have been married for over 63 years. Dick and Peg raised their family in Rye, NY and then retired to Sanibel, FL where they have lived for close to 30 years.

Dick was a dedicated volunteer, business man and family man. He purchased Hoffman Engineering, a small lighting laboratory, in the mid 1970's and grew it to a national company that contracted with the US government and Fortune 100 companies. Dick's commitment to volunteering was outstanding. He served in a leadership role for many organizations including over 20 years with the Rye Fire Department and Rye Baseball League. After retiring to Sanibel, he continued with his volunteer spirit and leadership with the Sanibel Lions, Ding Darling Bird Sanctuary, Healthpark, Sanibel Fire Department and Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ. He received many volunteer service awards including recognition from US Fish and Wildlife for his contributions to the new Ding Darling Visitor's Center and over 3,500 hours of service. Dick was a role model with his commitment to family, service, entrepreneurship and mentoring many special people along the way.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Dick's life will be held at Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ on Friday, April 26 at 11 am. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ (2050 Periwinkle Way; Sanibel, FL 33957; 239-472-0497).
