Volunteers deliver Meals-by-F.I.S.H. to islanders

In partnership with Bailey's General Store, F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva offers hot, nutritious meal delivery five days per week, as well as a food option for the weekends.

Bailey's Chefs Karl and JT carefully plan and prepare the Meals-by-F.I.S.H. menu and staff members sort, package and label each meal daily, which are picked up and delivered by F.I.S.H. volunteers.

Each hot meal consists of a protein, starch and vegetable and works on a two-week set menu cycle. Examples of the meals include oven-roasted bone in chicken with rice and vegetable, broiled Atlantic salmon with rice and vegetable, and grilled chicken Caesar salad. Modifications to menu selections can be accommodated, to some extent, based on dietary preference or allergies.

The Meals-by-F.I.S.H. program is available to anyone would like to participate. It benefits islanders ranging from seniors who may not cook as much as they once did, to someone who needs the program temporarily due to illness or injury. There is no minimum time commitment for the service, so F.I.S.H. can accommodate a variety of individual situations.

The service costs $7 per meal, however F.I.S.H. will evaluate individuals on a case-by-case basis and offer a partial or total subsidy, depending on need.

"We have had some older folks that suffer from poor nutrition because they were opting to pay housing and medical bills rather than buy nutritious food," F.I.S.H. President Maggi Feiner said. "We are glad to be able to provide financial assistance for this very important program."

One neighbor is enrolled in the meals program five days per week.

"I want you to know what your program means to me. It's really difficult to get out and about these days, and I don't like to cook," he said. "I'm truly grateful to the friendly volunteers who deliver my lunch and dinner, and to the wonderful people who cook my meals. Thank you F.I.S.H. and Bailey's!"
