Sanibel Sea School to offer red tide talk

November 6, 2019
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Sanibel Sea School's educational programs for adults are back, and the organization is launching the season with an opportunity to learn about red tide - a locally relevant topic - during a lecture given by marine biologist Dr. Bruce Neill on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon.

"Red tide is a complex natural phenomenon in our area of the Gulf of Mexico, and this region is an epicenter for red tide events. Red tide is confusing, fascinating, horrifying, and of utmost importance to local residents," Neill, the Sanibel Sea School's executive director, said.

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the complex organism and its various impacts and learn how scientists are using technology to better inform the public of the local effects of red tide.

There may be a short shore walk included, depending on beach conditions.

For more information or to register, call 239-472-8585 or visit sanibelseaschool.org/sanibel-adult-programs.
